mkv (or avi) and srt subtitles

Is it possible to use a subtitle file (srt) when playing an avi or a mkv file with the mediaplayer.

If not, this would be a useful feature for me

It should work, unfortunately it doesn't work for me. I have renamed the srt file to the same name of the avi (or mkv). No subtitles are shown.

Do I need to change some settings?

Have you aktivated the subtitels with Menu->subtitels or with the text-key?

There is some strange case with polish subtittles and polish letters.

I made subtitles file with program Subtitle Tool (Windows XP).
When I switched on subtitles I saw badly coded polish fonts (in attachement pictures and .srt file). In attached pictures I added red letters which should be displayed.

I thought that it's because file is not UTF-8 do I converted subtitles to UTF-8 and in this case there is no subtitles on the screen.

For me it seems that DM8000 use wrong type of font for polish letters.
Is it possible to change Media Center font type in some config file?

it turned out, your subtitle file is not in UTF-8 encoding but codepage 1250. your can convert any file to the correct encoding using the tool iconv (i will put it into the download database) using the following commands on the telnet console of your dreambox or any linux pc:

Source code

1
2
mv Prison.Break.S04E16.HDTV.XviD-LOL.srt Prison.Break.S04E16.HDTV.XviD-LOL.srt~
iconv -f CP1250 -t UTF-8 Prison.Break.S04E16.HDTV.XviD-LOL.srt~ > Prison.Break.S04E16.HDTV.XviD-LOL.srt

then it should display correctly.
attached, you'll find and already converted version of your original srt file.

Thank You for quick reply.
When should We expect this tool in data base?
Will It be improved in future versions of firmware? I mean some routine that automaticly will check codepage of file and convert it will be very helpfull for not advenced users.

automatic detection of codepages is black magic and not anything that i would want to reliably leave to the box itself. maybe somebody will come up with a graphical enigma2 frontend for the codepage converter as a plugin *hint hint*

ThX It works.

Two more thinks:
1st Yes I understand that auto converter is almost impossilbe to write , so maybe GUI implementation for inconv in Multimedia Center is solution?

2nd Is there config file where I can change subtitles display parameters?
-font size
-font colour
For me font size is ok, but other people may prefer bigger/smaller because of some reasons. And subtitle colour is also importance. For example I prefer yellow.

font type, font position, font size and font color are currently hardwired in c code of the enigma2 backend and therefore not user-customizable yet. hopefully we can eventuelly make the subtitle options (the current limitations also apply to DVB and teletext subtitles) graphically configurable in enigma2 configuration

@fraxinas It will be very comfortable if software is more flexible with configuration, especialy like this one. But also with another plugins.
For example few days ago I playing with RSdownlowader. I tried to find config file and put there all paths to directories . Unfortunately there was no such of file in RS- no they were in plugin dir but they were unreadable with text editor (prapobly it was denied or compiled in some way).

Just think, about giving to owner/advenced user bigger possibility of configuration.

I also recently fought a little war with the .SRT subtitle encoding. (1251 to UTF-8 )

And I won this war with the help of the free text editor EditPad Lite. It is perfect for converting subtitles to UTF-8. It works very intuitive and user friendly. Just click [CONVERT => Text Encoding] and you are ready to go. You see the preview of the encoding changes. Highly recommend this text editor.

EDIT:
And the ability to change the subtitle font size is very needed option indeed.

ArabianSoul: .srt subtitles are styleable by skin in experimental image since may or so and thanks for the EditPad Lite tip

I noticed another subtitle error. The image I use is Oozoon compiled in 05.07.2009. The problem is with polish fonts.

At the beginning of the movie subtitles are displayed well, but after hour maybe 1,5 h polish fonts are displayed badly like on a screen below:

It lokes like subtittles are not converted but as I said at the beggining of movie the are display well.

I found it.
It's not an easy task to find the file SKIN.XML if you are not a developer.
It's location is in the: /usr/share/enigma2/*NAME_OF_THE_SKIN*/

And to change the subtitle size, you have to edit this section of SKIN.XML:
...
<subtitles>
<sub name="Subtitle_TTX" font="Regular;45" shadowColor=...
<sub name="Subtitle_Regular" font="Regular;45" foregroundColor=...
<sub name="Subtitle_Bold" font="Replacement;45" foregroundColor=...
<sub name="Subtitle_Italic" font="Regular;45" foregroundColor=...
</subtitles>
...

This temporary solution is OK for me. (The whole life is a temporary thing :D )

But there is a problem with the subtitle synchronization when you jump ahead or backward in the movie, with the 1/4/7 and 3/6/9 buttons. Or change the playback speed.
It's seems that the only Video<|>Subtitle synchronization is done only once - when you start the subtitle.

Hello,

Almost halo of year before I noticed problem with:

- subtitle synchronization after pause, fast-forward or rewind action
- badly displayed (after some time) polish fonts

I've considered to buy some other top-set hardware to watch moves in good conditions but I'm still waiting for DMM developers answer in this case.

I see that DM8000 supports new multimedia formats but there I can't see progress in this case? Can someone tell me what will be in this issue?
